MCCRC ROWING PROGRAM: Participation, Extension & Pathways
Marist College Canberra Rowing Club program is based on participation, extension and pathways. This offers a range of opportunities for rowers to compete at different levels depending on their interest and capability.
ACT CLUB REGATTAS
During the regatta season ACT clubs and schools host various regattas. These regattas have school, open, masters and para events. They usually start from 7am and often finish early to mid-afternoon. Once competent, boys will have the opportunity to be nominated by coaches in appropriate events. It is expected boys will be attend the appropriate location and time. It is not unusual for boys to be required to attend the entire event. Usually there will be a club presentation for medal winners at the conclusion of the regatta.
ACT HEAD OF THE LAKE & ACT CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTAS
The ACT Head of the Lake and ACT Championships are traditionally held on one weekend, with racing held across both days in a double-header style competition. This is usually the culmination of the school regatta season in the ACT. This is a target regatta for our crews as the weekend will often attract visiting schools and provides MCCRC with a higher standard of competition than club regattas.
NSW SCHOOL BOY HEAD OF THE RIVER (SBHOR) REGATTA
The rowers will have the opportunity to compete in the NSW Schoolboy Head of the River regatta at SIRC in Penrith. While organized by the MCCRC Club, this event is run as a school excursion. There will be additional expenditure to cover transport, accommodation, and food. Naturally, the club will endeavour to minimise costs where possible and communication will occur in advance to allow families to make a decision about participation. Transport to and from Penrith is organised for all rowers.
NOTE: Some Senior Rowers may be required at the Boat Shed for the loading and unloading of boats before and after travel.
ADDITIONAL INTERSTATE REGATTAS FOR EXTENSION ROWERS
At times, coaches and extension rowers may wish to compete at a higher level of competition at interstate regattas, particularly at SIRC Penrith, including the NSW Championships or even the Australian National Championships. Attending these regattas are considered an extension of the Marist rowing program and will not be treated as a school excursion. Although the club will endeavour to provide assistance to families and coaches wishing to represent Marist and enter and compete in these regattas, considerations will need to be made with regard to the use, transport and care of club equipment. Families will be directly responsible for their children, and need to organise their own transport, accommodation, food and supervision.
DUAL CLUB MEMBERSHIP
To enhance their rowing opportunities, some boys may wish to concurrently join another rowing club. This may provide additional opportunities unable to be offered by MCCRC. It is expected these boys will fulfill their MCCRC training and competition obligations, as a priority.
